This list is not necessarily a list of my favourite films, it is not a list of the movies I like the most. Rather, the films you see here are those I think serve the title best, as the greatest films ever made; however, when that is said, the reasoning I have done to compile this list and judge the movies of the world, is of course highly influenced by my personal taste. To say something different would be to lie, and to do something different would simply have made a tedious selection. What more, it should be obvious that I have not seen every film in existence, and when compiling such a list as this one has to make some tough decisions and prioritize some films over other.
The choices I have made is open to debate. That's why there is a comment section, but please, leave a sensible reply, not some hateful message or for instance "Ohheeew, Goodfellas should be numba 1 sucka!!!". If you do not include an explanation to your opinion, I may be difficult not to take it as anything but an insult. I love discussing films, so let us discuss, not brag or fight or be arrogant.
I made this list to kill time, I must admit. It took some hard working, but it's been a delight, especially as a motivation to watch the classics in film. I hope you'll enjoy this list, and I also hope you'll find some of your own favourites in there, or maybe some new ones! I will be bold enough to say that every films in this list should appeal to those who love cinema (oh well!). The intention of the list is therefore to give recommendations, and I would like to get recommendations back. Thank you for watching, and for reading this description -- if you actually did! ;-)
Just after finishing this list I saw Kurosawa's "The Bad Sleep Well". I believe it would have found its rightful place in the top 20.
For those who are curious, the music is Popol Vuhs soundtrack for Aguirre, Der Zorn Gottes.
Thank you for reading this description (if you actually did)! ;-)
Great list,.. i thought the order was strange. i.e to put films like the Shawshank Redemtion so far back in the list? But all the films you chose are brilliant.

@RSshenanigans you must be mistaking this for a list of the most overrated movies of all time: titanic = cute; dark knight = fun but ultimately typical superhero movie; inception = fun popcorn flick designed to trick mainstream audiences into thinking they've watched something deep.

@RSshenanigans those don't really compare to most of the films on this list. And just because it's not in this guy's top 230 doesnt mean it's not worth seeing or it's not good

Ah, i guess Titanic isnt a movie worth seeing according to this list. Oh not to mention the Dark Knight. And psssh, who needs inception right?

I would have some reservations about the order, but no doubt the list is remarkable and representative of the very best of the best. Here go some more suggestions:
- Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (S. Kramer, 1967)
- Peyton Place (M. Robson, 1957)
- Duel (S. Spielberg, 1971)
- THX 1138 (G. Lucas, 1971)
- Paris, Texas (W. Wenders, 1984)
- Die Ehe der Maria Braun (R.W. Fassbinder, 1979)
- Mephisto (I. Szabó, 1981)
- Koyaanisqatsi (G. Reggio, 1983)
- Mary Poppins (R. Stevenson, 1964)
