EDIT: Game has been released here:
http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_2_Retro_Remix

This is a short video displaying new level art by DNXDelta, the mission system that will be the basis for the rest of the hack's development, and a few new moves: midair actions after bouncing from springs (such as the ones in Sonic Advance 2/3 and the Rush series), and wall kicks.

Also, I'd like to thank LightningWolf3, Seenik09, and MegaGWolf for posting videos of the last public release. Free publicity is always nice.

  • Cool hack bro, the only bad thing is the hub system. Everyone hated the Adventure worlds in Sonic Adventure 1 and despised the overworld in Sonic Advance 3, what makes you think anyone likes them now?

  • @MajBlood There's hubs because I like the idea of being able to replay the levels instead of playing through start to finish and then restarting the game; it's kind of the crux of the game. Without a hub to link levels together and to use for hiding a few collectibles, the idea of a mission-based game falls apart, unless you're into a menu-unlock interface... but then I can't make secret levels as rewards for good explorers.

  • Hm...I like it. It's very impressive I'd never know sega didn't make this. I just wish it were a little more like sonic. Personally I'd find the missions very easy. Also...maybe changing up the bosses instead of ripping it from sonic 2 =P. I already know they're weaknesses and strengths it'd be no challange haha. Maybe you should make a difficulty level for the lameos that play video games and for the serious hard core gamers out there. Just a possiblity.

  • A few things:

    * Nothing was "ripped" from Sonic 2. This game is built right on top of Sonic 2's code, and that's why I continually urge people to have played the original game first.

    * I don't think you'd find it easy at all. Everybody who's played this has commented on how hard it is. You watch the videos and see missions completed, but you don't have to *find* the emeralds just by watching.

    * What do you mean, "more like sonic"?

    I appreciate your interest.

  • love this hack, but just 1 question.. with savestates is there a reason that after loading up a previously saved state it shows the amount of emeralds collected before the save but the objectives on each level are unticked? This hack is too difficult for me without states lol.. :|

  • Genesis hacks that automatically save data make their own save files, usually with a .srm extension. Savestates don't alter these files, so if you make a savestate and that .srm file is altered, your game will show errors when you reload the savestate. The "reason" this occurs is that I'm not going to design my game around compatibility with a cheat function. >_>

There's a video walkthrough being created on my YouTube profile if you really need help. Two acts are vidded so far.

  • Thumb this up if you realised the music on the mission screen is the menu music from Yu Yu Hakusho - Makyoutohissen

  • for old games, it hacks, but for new they call it mods :P

  • @MajBlood what makes you think everyone hated hub system? I love it! It's one of the best things Sonic has had! And think about other games like GTA. It's like a hub world itself!

  • I hope this comes with a manual. I like it old school!

  • @MajBlood Ah. Well, I just guess that gameplay aspect isn't for everyone, but I quite enjoy exploring :P

  • @xForgetxMeNot One of the few others you mean. I remember when Sonic Adventure 2 came out. One of the biggest reasons it was more popular and better received than SA1 is the fact that it did away with the tedious hub world.

  • I'd have to say this is one of the better of the hack games. I would certainly play this (if only doing something like this wouldn't make my laptop run at a snail's pace and mess it up XD)

  • @MajBlood Where are you getting this "everybody" business? I, among many others, rather enjoy the hub worlds.

  • this is really awsome
