@E96Bahrain It was too controversial at the time, the climate of the country was very different. 27 years later this movie would sweep the awards.

Seems that Sophia realizes that Celie is tormented by her husband. She actually does realize right away when Celie told Harpo to beat her. That's why she told Celie that she should stand up for herself and bash Mr's head open.
