@brendansimons A follow up to myself: I did some research, and most thermoplastics don't transition as nicely from solid to liquid as wax. Instead they turn into high viscosity sludges. Too bad, I was hoping to use this technique with polyethelyne.

is their any advantage instead of just using a end mill?

@ShnitzlHaus Only in some cases. The wax is melted instead of cut, so high forces are not required at the tool-tip. That means that the XYZ table can be much more flexible (and cheaper and easier-to-make) than is normally required for conventional machining. Also, for what it is worth, there are no chips!
