Indonesia Investigates Deadly Plane Crash

The investigation continues into what led an Indonesian military jet to come crashing down yesterday in East Java. Now, family members are burrying their loved ones who perished in the tragedy.

Indonesia's armed forces began burying the dead from a military plane crash in East Java that killed around 100 people. Among the casualties were at least two people killed on the ground when the C-130 Hercules transport plane struck several homes and burst into flames. Senior military officials and families watched as honour guards loaded coffins into a plane headed for the nation's capital, Jakarta. Most of the dead were soldiers and their families, while officials say they are still searching for three people listed as missing. [Major Sutrisno, Iswahyudi Airbase Spokesman]: "There were 112 people on board the plane according to the manifest. We have found only 109 so far, with 15 survivors. We have listed the remaining three as missing." At nearby Sadowo hospital, doctors attended to survivors of the crash. Meanwhile, the military took the dead to a makeshift mortuary at the airbase hospital. Forensic personnel are carrying out autopsies before the bodies are sent home. The armed forces are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, while efforts continue to clear debris and the search for the three listed as missing. Indonesia has seen a series of deadly crashes recently involving military and commercial aircraft, and Indonesian airlines are currently banned from European Union airspace due to safety concerns.
