@Skdxyt shut the fuck up...first off my grandpa has his phd in mechanical engineering and he does make people address him as doctor hell he doesn't even mention the fact that he has his phd to a lot of people...this is clearly a power issue and just because she's a fucking louzy senator means she can cry about it to everyone...OH MAH GAWD I am a senator adress me by senator while I sit on my thumb...

You should not call a senator Mam/Sir just as you can't call a Judge Mam/Sir, You must call them "your honor". You can actually be held in contempt and jailed for not addressing a Judge as "your honor" by law. As our parents respectfully taught us to address people as Sir or Mam; It is to be used for those (majority of citizens) who have not earned titles such as Dr., Senator, President, General, Honor, etc... The Army manual is only stating what is appropriate to call other service members.

metele1, Actually, the general was addressing her exactly what he was supposed to. What he should have done was said, "Senator Boxer, regulations specifically state that I respectfully address people of rank as sir or ma'am. You might want to read the book for yourself some time."
And, even if it were a legitimate grievance, it should have been dealt with after the proceeding and not 'During' it. She was a complete unprofessional at that moment, and she should have been chastised for it.

Sure, maybe it would've been more appropriate for her to have asked to be addressed as Senator from the beginning. But both the military and democratic arenas have certain protocols, including terms of respect and ways of addressing the person to who you're speaking. You seem to be reacting in a way that shows you believe the military's protocol takes precendence through and above all other scenarios. You are not examining your own values. Not taking either side here, just making an observation.

Pretentious bitch. When I was in bootcamp twenty years ago, we were taught to call ladies......"ma'am". That general only did what he thought he was supposed to do.

SenBoxer' said: "because we were having a back and forth and I kept saying 'general' and he kept saying 'ma'am', and it went general, ma'am, general, ma'am. And I thought, you know what, this is one of those times we ought to call each other by our titles,"
She asked nicely. Is there a reason why he shouldnt show her the SAME respect she was showing him calling him by his title.

I must have missed the part where she 'Asked Nicely.' I mean, from your comment, it appears she was trying to communicate telepathically?
Darn that decorated army general for not having mind-reading abilities! Darn him, and darn his kind!
In all seriousness, he was following protocol. If he had broken it (without her asking, which she did not), then that would look bad on his end.
Fortunately, it only looked bad on her's.
