What Matters to me?

My Family.

This is my entry for the VFS / Youtube Scholarship.

This animated short follows a Tuba playing Snail and his realization of what really matters more to him.

I based this story off of my own life. I used to do nothing but lock myself up in my room. Eventually that became my life and I did not spend very much time with my family. I have realized that it is my family that matters most to me.

My name is Thomas Nguyen,I have been a self taught animator for 3 years.I am a senior at Southside High School. Computer animation is my passion and I would love to go to Vancouver Film School to further my education. But unfortunately there are financial road blocks between me and my dream. Winning this scholarship will change everything.

A Snail Tale was a learning experience for me. I have learned so much by participating in this competition. Even if I do not win, I believe I have become a better animator because of this.

I hope you enjoy my animated short.

*Note*: the movie turned out a little darker than I wanted to (picture quality wise.) You may have to up your brightness just a little bit.

*this is a resubmit, the first one did not meet the competition requirements.*

Ah May 20th.

Am I disappointed that I diddn't even get an alternate spot? Of course I am.

Do I regret ever taking on this challenge.

No, not at all.

For a couple weeks this was life: Modeling, Animating, Rendering. Repeat repeat for hours and hours.

I wanted to win so bad. I have nothing else in my life but to do CG. I'm not remotely as good at anything else. Not to say I'm any good at CG. I'm still a learner.

I didn't win. But I walk out of this competition without regret. I have gain skills that will make me a better CG artist in the future.

For those who didn't win. If you have a passion for your trade, don't let something like this effect you. Keep at it. Never give up!

Thank you VFS and Youtube.

Good Night.

reminds me of those pixar shorts. good job!

  • cool video !!! i wish i could do 3D animation .. maybe i'll learn it someday. :)

thanks for your comment and good luck !!!!

  • This is impressive. You definitely have a future in animation. I can't believe you taught yourself how to do this. VFS says they are looking for people who would benefit from a scholarship and I think you fit that criteria. If you're serious about going to the school, you should go even without the scholarship. They have a loan program. It's only money dude. Best of luck. Oh, and I think you did a good job on the shots. That's cool, since you had to imagine it all.
