BEIJING — A Tibetan monk died after self-immolating in China over the weekend, state media said Monday, taking to 15 the number of people who set themselves on fire in Tibetan areas in less than a year.
Nyage Sonamdrugyu, 40, set himself ablaze early Sunday morning in Qinghai in northwest China, the official Xinhua news agency reported, adding the monk was a high-ranking lama -- a Tibetan Buddhist teacher.
It is the first time the Tibetan-inhabited province has been hit by such a protest. Most self-immolations have taken place in the neighbouring province of Sichuan, in what rights groups have said are protests against perceived religious repression.
It is unclear why Nyage Sonamdrugyu set himself on fire in Gyumai town, part of the Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Golog.
The incident comes after two former monks in Sichuan set themselves on fire on Friday -- one of whom died and another who is being treated in hospital.
Many Tibetans in China accuse the government of religious repression and eroding their culture, as the country's majority Han ethnic group increasingly moves into historically Tibetan areas.
But China rejects this, saying Tibetans enjoy religious freedom and pointing to huge ongoing investment, which it says has brought modernisation and a better standard of living.

  • @InteractiveHealing Off course i support the Dalai Lama but that does not mean i hate the chinese people i just hate the way the Chinese gvt functions how they think they can take anything they want just because the nation is not as big as itself. My words go out for both tibet and taiwan. If you really want to make a video then you should do your research and relate your topic to multiple situations in this world. Then maybe your video will go viral and have our sturggels noticed.

  • @MyHeroBreezy ok, come to whittier and make them with me!!!

  • & for those inconsiderate bastards disrespecting the Dalai Lama I say open your fuucking eyes and see through the deception of the Chinese. Actually they're probably those that have been paid a pitiable amount of money to go online and spread trash so china can look "better". Chinese people are not be hated its the government. The land of snow has been tainted with its own children's blood by the disgusting Chinese government. How pitiful must they be to gain global support ? Enough is enough

  • @MyHeroBreezy ok - so u support the dalai lama? do you hate chinese oppressing the tibetans? i don't like any kind of oppression! thx for ur comments :)

  • The reason why they do such sad acts is because there is no other ways. The internet is highly monitored, emails hacked as you mentioned, Streets in Tibet are patrolled by Chinese paramilitary. You risk your lives and your family lives if you speak up on internet, that is if you were successful at sending your video files online without CCP tracking your IP address. If these Tibetan had spoken up, their family, friends, neighborhood would be further oppressed.

  • and that is why Tibetans resort to such sad actions. They see that the world is addicted to China's cheap labors, products. They realize that World news and leaders have looked away from the sufferings of Tibetans inside Tibet for long enough and only way to gain their attention is through them sacrificing their lives. So that there would be some chance of Freedom in Tibet from getting media's world's attention.

And yes, i agree, they should not but Tibetans have been suffering for too long

  • Making these videos. Anyhow it's pretty sad how the world has turned its blind eyes toward our situation just because we are not a big manufacturing country like china who supplies cheap goods through out the world. The UNO is in my opinion is a sham. It's there when big countries are faced with problem but when smaller countries need help they're no where to be found. It's also pretty sad how the human rights law has gone down the drain for Tibet, china needs to be condemned for its actions !

  • I'm not trying to be offensive or anything but I read through all the comments and I don't understand how your are replying to everyone with little sarcastic comments. And hey power to you for trying to support Tibet. Now let me share my feelings.:) your video is very lacking please do some research and try making a video where fully detailed information is being put it so that way the people who don't know anything about this topic might get a little enlightened. I'm very thankful that you are
