You do what I do, Or similar. Whenever I name layers I name it "Clothes Base" "Hair Base" then "Hair Shade" " clothes shade". Great tutorial very clear and step by step for starters

Using the polygon lassoo tool is a slow way to make a selection, have you tried multifill?

Here is a better idea, use a drawing tablet, because it is like drawing and inking on paper, and it takes a hell of a lot less time.

Having done both, its not really that much faster and gives to a lot more errors in base flats. Also, not everyone has a tablet who wants to color comics. This tutorial isn't about tablets.
