1 mL of vinegar is transferred into an ampoule ("beaker") with syringe 1 ("measuring pipette"). 1 mL of water and a drop of phenolphthalein solution are added.
1 mL of 1M NaOH ("titrant") are sucked into syringe 2 ("burette"). As titrant is added drop by drop the acid solution the indicator turns red as each drop hits the vinegar; but the colour disappears on mixing. The equivalence point is marked by a permanent red colour of the indicator.
