You shudn't have subdivided or even used the subsurf modifier. You had a great low poly model! It would have had no lag if used in the BGE. Is this only for rendering?

@3D3min no no no. i duplicated the low poly then hid it. made the new one high poly and i baked the detail from the high poly to the low poly, so it looked high poly but its really low

Wow I've never done that before. How do you bake one model to another?

@3D3min okay so you get a good unwrap on your low poly, then duplicate it, now subdivide it to hell and then model out all the details you want, now hit bake. and apply that baked texture to the low poly and done. (i showed all of this in this tutorial by the way)
