United Nations, New York, 29 August 2011 - Warning that voluntary moratoriums on nuclear weapon tests are not enough, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today called on all Member States that have not yet done so to urgently ratify the United Nations-backed treaty banning them.
"Over the course of the Cold War, hundreds of nuclear weapon tests left behind a devastating legacy for local citizens and their natural environment," he said in a message marking the International Day against Nuclear Tests. "Current voluntary moratoriums on nuclear weapon tests are valuable, yet they are no substitute for a global ban."

  • millions? more like billions of lives are threatened by nuclear weapons.

    As far as I can tell, there are only two acceptable uses of nuclear technology; energy necessities and space travel.

    The idea that any country should stockpile nuclear weapons should seem insane to most people.

    There is no such thing as a winnable situation with nuclear weapons, so lets stop this poison while we can.

    We owe at least that much to future generations..

  • @joebuddyable Bravo! At least, your comment is showing . Many are pending approval and are being totally censored...So much for freedom of speech and right to an opinion. Makes North Korea seem like a role model.

    The same goes for the hundreds of nations at the mercy of the permanent councill and their right to veto...

    UN= Unheard nations

  • Why just ban Nuclear tests, why not ban Nuclear energy all together? Deep Sea Vents are greater at producing energy & do not harm the environment. See "Marshal Hydro Thermal Energy" & find out how unnecessary & harmful Nuclear energy is compared to Deep Sea Vents.

  • More or less 70 wars (invasions and pillage) since your creation??!!.... More deaths than any previous war, ever! Wasn't your alledged purpose after WWII, to prevent the exact opposite????

    Ironic how you have the cojones to talk about banning nuclear tests when your (perm) councill owns the largest nukes arsenal of all times, capable of destroying the planet dozens of times over... Some can always argue it's never too late to do well but most now know you never really meant to do so....

  • good work@UN : )

  • ...those that hold deadly technology that is massively dangerous must post a bond or surety in real gold

    ~equal to the maximum potential death & destruction that such holdings of technology could induce under the worst case provable

    = Failure to submit or dismantle such technology would cause United Nations Sanctions; this includes existing military kill tech and dangerous holdings such as nuclear energy facilitys such as Fukushima, chemical plants such as Bophol India, Hover Dam & oil tankers

  • I want to work for the UN that would be a dream come true.

  • Without sharing the world's resources there will be no world justice. Without world justice there will be no world peace. Without world peace there will be no world.

  • the Atomic Energy Commision has the highest security in Defense, we certainly need more nuclear energy especially in remote area of the world. How could we remedy this. Also is it possible to offer every country in the world to proper water infastructures. Just like the piping networks currently being set up in Africa. Well done for all your Hard Work and your endeavours
