I challenge you to find ONE geologist that says ALL or any strata takes "millions of years" to from.
Turbidites are deep sea deposits and have alternating sand and mud stone layers. The mudstone layers do take thousands of years but the thicker sand stone sequences are made in mear minutes.
However I believe you already know people think this. Its much easier to argue against a straw man than what geologists actually think huh?

Let me see, on one hand we have thousands of hard-working field geologists working calculating experimenting testing and publishing the results of their good work for peer-review over decades pretty much all coming to the same conclusion about the strata and composition of the earth.

@vancouvermild I'm far from brilliant. I've had a great many good teachers over the years who've challenged me to think critically about things. Not always the what as much as the why. There's a line from Babylon 5 that really hits the mark: "Understanding is a 3-edged sword". If deity exists is not really the question-that's a matter of faith and beyond science. But people who look at books like Genesis and say it's literal when it's not? That really irritates me.

However, there are some that can't reconcile bible stories of creation with the scientifically driven account of evolution. Hence, they become involved with the creationist movement. I'm sure there are even some that might otherwise accept the evidence for evolution but can't reconcile that acceptance with creationism and the financial incentive, thereby "fool" themselves into accepting the creationist account.
There'll be a 3rd reply - misjudged length...

Stop showing off your brilliance!...(kidding). All kidding aside, I too have already considered the psychological component, and it never ceases to amaze how some otherwise intelligent scientists (albeit very few of them) WANT to desparately cling to their indoctrinated beliefs. Mind you, I can at least live with the ones that accept the OVERWHELMING evidence for evolution, but have to qualify that acceptance with the belief of an initial creator...

@vancouvermild A lot of it is identity too. A persecution mindset just makes them cling even harder to their preconceived beliefs. The will believe in spite of the proof. Indeed, some will get professional qualifications at legitimate schools just so they can cry against what they have been taught. Look up Emil Silvescue (hope I got the spelling correct) and go thru some of his videos. The admitted lack of integrity there is astounding. And for creationists? Business as usual.

Brilliant! You're obviously a well-rounded individual (like both the late Carl Sagan and I). It's a multi-faceted problem that warrants multi-faceted analyses. That is, whenever an otherwise highly credentialed individual is seemingly contradictory (given his/her credentials), never rule out the financial motive. Apparently, you didn't rule it out - and you're presumably not even a business specialist or economist? I like the way you evidently think outside the box!
-
@vancouvermild Actually, I did some of that awhile back. An individual is very difficult to track without an legal basis, but an institution...much easier. I found the particulars for AiG out of the Better Business Bureau. Turns out that their theme park turns a million a year in profit, and Ken Hamm clears 200K. These figures are several years old now and do not reflect in cash input from the Ark Experience addition they are getting state funding for ($5 million+)

Remember that everything I will communicate is speculative, but a very reasonable possibility. Some creationists are starting to see the writing on the wall. In his society (USA), there is a LOT of money to be made in creationists philosophy. After all, church, evangelism, and so forth, is BIG business! What better way to protect its big business interests than to pay validly credentialed people above market to help keep church-going people brainwashed?

I'm guessing you're science educated? Checking the validity of his credentials was a good move (aside: remember that his credentials are in Biology - not Geology; but that's all beside the point I will soon make). However, perhaps you should take a different approach (my approach). Being business educated, my approach would be to try to either rule out, or confirm, any possible economic incentive for his lies.

polystrate trees have been explained 150 yrs ago, how is it still "stumping" you? we see evidence of several marshes sinking today.
it's funny you bring up Steve Austin, for some reason that rings a bell of something he got caught lying about once or twice. I'll have to look it up, but you can certainly find evidence of being dishonest with his dating of mt st helens rock. visit talkorigins net and they have it all there in detail.
Hmm, I hear conflicting explanations between scientists and religious leaders, who should I believe?
