The Australian Cinémathèque presents an extensive Alfred Hitchcock (1899--1980) retrospective including all 56 films still in existence and 17 selected episodes for television.
Hitchcock remains one of the most recognised and successful filmmakers of the twentieth century. His career spanned six decades and over fifty films, from early silent cinema through to his masterpieces of suspense in Hollywood. Hitchcock's passion for technical innovation and visual narrative helped shape the development of modern cinema.
While he worked across a variety of genres, it is his mastery of the suspense-thriller that his trademark. A skilful manipulator of menace and anxiety, Hitchcock's orchestration of deceptively mundane situations and their nightmarish counterpoint helped redefine the genre and see him dubbed 'The Master of Suspense'.
