How to make the laser blaster sound from Star Wars - Part 2

This video shows how to make the laser blaster sound from the Star Wars movies. Looking on the serious side though, its an excellent example of dispersion of waves in a medium. In the Slinky, higher frequencies travel faster than lower frequencies, which is what gives the sound you hear.

This is a two-part video - The first part deals with just the basics and aims to be a little more entertaining than serious, this second part contains some more in depth discussion for students with more of a background in physics.

Yep, its a Freistaat Bayern towel, and it was a leaving present from an excellent young engineering student that I had working with me on exchange a couple of years ago. He didn't have space to pack it, and I needed something to cover my tatty old chair - problem solved...
