gonchar was waring down age their no need to sign someone that will not produce because of age or wont be with team for years to come gm ray shero always wants to bring younger players that are good but he has always have somthing in mind will players that the pens oraganization sign are key role players like martin and other guy who i cant spell
Paul Martin isn't coming to Pittsburgh to replace Sergei Gonchar. Nobody ever will, or can. Gonchar was great for us, and will remain one of my favorite players for a LONG LONG time. He meant so much to the Penguins in their cup run, and to the careers of Crosby, Staal, and Malkin ESPECIALLY. Paul Martin is an awesome two-way defenseman and we'll be glad to have him and Michalek here in Pittsburgh. Probably better for us to get younger anyway and lock up a core on D. But still, Gonch = awesome.
@Pensgirl29 seems like you have some unknown problem with sarge. He didnt leave here on bad terms. He wanted to stay here. He was great for our team for 5 years. And martin cant score on gonchar. Oh i get it you think sarge is a goalie? lol. i wish him the best of luck wherever he goes. And geno would not be where he is in american culture and the nhlm if it werent for sarge. You should have said you cant wait to he martin score on his former team. not a guy that he has & had nothing to do with
Sergei Gonchar was awesome for the Penguins, my 2nd fav player behind Crosby, I'm glad he got a Cup with the Penguins, he was a great player and team guy and I wish him good luck in the future. As a Penguins fan, I trust the management that they made the right choice in not overpaying for him for 3 more years since he's 36 and if Ottawa wants to overpay that's on them. Penguins made some smart choices in replacing him with some young defensemen in Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek so I'm happy.
Fun fact: Andy Greene scored more goals than Paul Martin this past season.
Good riddance, Paul.
