The true and frightening tale of a ghost encounter on Ship Island in Fort Massachusetts! The song may be downloaded here - http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/4595644 for $0.99 USD
Fort Massachusetts is on Ship Island in the Mississippi Sound, twelve miles off of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This video is an attempt to recount a chilling experience that myself and others had there, back in 1969. To this day I get chill bumps when I think of that night! I believe the song and video tell the basic story quite well and I probably don't need to repeat much of that here. What I will do is try to add bit more information about the island and its history.
There were approximately 18,000 union troops that were stationed on the island during the course of the war. The 2nd Regiment Louisiana Native Guards assigned to guard Ship Island were one of first African-American Regiments organized during the Civil War. At least 230 Union troops perished there as a result of harsh conditions and disease. 153 Confederate soldiers were known to have died there! There were also women who were imprisoned there for aiding the Confederacy. This would have been hell on earth place in those days. The island had no fresh water, the sun is relentless, and there are no trees for shade.
I remember when I was a small boy going there and at the time there were still RACKS - Torture devices which to stretch a human body. I dont know what happened to those. I suspect that they were destroyed by vandals or by some hurricane. Anyway, that was the kind of horrible place that it was during the war years.
The obelisk in the fort no longer exists, In fact, the obelisk used in the video is superimposed on the photographs. It is not the ORIGINAL but only used to make the point. I have searched and searched but cannot find a picture of the original monument. I think perhaps, that it was destroyed by Hurricane Camille in late 1969. The aerial photo of the fort does however show the original!
As for who the Ghost Lady might be??? Im not at all sure! The only womans name that I have been able to document having died there is Mrs. William Kirby. Who knows, there were surely others on the island at various times. The most famous of which is Eugenia Levy Phillips, who was eventually released from the prison.
Anyway, there you have it, a few details about a very interesting place of history. If you are ever in the area (Gulfport, MS) try to take the excursion boat to the island. The trip itself is worth doing But Be Careful, You might see a GHOST!
i like how you put some history into the song instead of going straight into the spooky bit great song!!!!
