CIDA pulls funding fro prestigious fellowship
In 2007 /A\ News legislature reporter Shachi Kurl was awarded the Jack Webster Foundation's "Seeing the World Through New Eyes" fellowship, on which she travelled throughout Cambodia and Vietnam, shooting, writing and producing a documentary series on international development, and bringing viewers stories from minefields and maternity wards.
The fellowship has sent approximately two dozen young journalists to developing nations so they could send back powerful and inspiring stories that have run in Vancouver Island newspapers and aired on TV newscasts.
Last month, that fellowship, called Seeing the World Through New Eyes, was cancelled because CIDA -- an agency of the federal government, withdrew its funding support.
