I've also read the account that has him going down fighting. Whether or not it's true, the moment in the film when the crowds shrink back from him is cinema magic.

The Fuzzy Wuzzies were the Taliban/al-Qaeda of their day, "Death to infidel dogs!", and pretty much needed to be dispatched in the same way-- sent to the bosom of Allah by being shot on sight and buried with bacon in their mouths.

@Briselance According to the account by Gordon's aide-de-camp, that's exactly how he went down, gins blazing. The way the movie portrays it is based on a romanticized painting that was popular at the time.

"...you smile and walk towards them. ..." Gordon went to the Sudan to suppress the slave trade. He was a deeply religious man. The idea that the movie is trying to put across is that Gordon knew he was doomed, he was not afraid to die, and that he did not want to pointlessly kill any of the people he had actually come there to help before he died. No one knows how he died. This scene is based on a famous painting. The Mahdi ordered his troops to take Gordon alive, but they killed him.

@sisc1995 Actually they cut off his head and took it to the Mahdi, who was so angry that he killed the man who had killed him.

There was no possiblity of a tactical retreat from Khartoum though. It is unfortunate that the British camel corps relief force arrived at Khartoum only 3 days later

No one knows how he died, but it is thought he was stabbed as he fell down the steps. Unfortunately it is highly unlikely it would have been as romanticised as it is in this adaptation

Well it's a movie so it's probably not the exact reality (though there's a much older picture in which the same scene is represented, so the director didn't invent everything)
