Hello :) On this one I'm playing the Bebop standard "Donna Lee". To prepare for this, I listened to and transcribed some Alain Caron, Clifford Brown and Stan Getz. I even borrowed a rhythmic idea from Stan Getz to start my solo off with...bonus points if you know which solo I got it from ;) This version is a little "raw" in a couple of spots, but I liked the energy of this take...hope you enjoy it...I know I enjoyed making it :)

  • Nicely done. A word of suggestion: rests can be your friend. Take a break every phrase or so, so the listener can stay focused. Also, Donna Lee begins on the upbeat of two and it sounds like you're starting early on the downbeat.

  • @thepione ...hehe...thanks, I'll keep that in mind ;) Actually...I'm pretty sure it starts on the downbeat of 3...have a listen ;)

  • I really dig your playing, thanks for all of the videos!

  • @mstott25 ...thanks man...appreciate it ;)

  • @shipbassguy Nearly every recording I've heard of Donna Lee does indeed start on the downbeat of 3, contrary to his anthology book which has it written as en eighth on the up of 2, tied to an eighth.

  • @yeebeascurvydawg I didn't hear any major time problems when I listened to it, the first half (I stopped it to comment) I went on your page thinking you would have some videos displaying your solid time and great groove, but I was bummed to see you had no videos. Do you think you could post one with better time so I can see what you are talking about? It would help me to understand how his timing was poor as you say.

  • YES!! I'liked it. Can you send notes, please? I'may make a video with fretless :-) Always fun to try.

  • wooow amazing

can i get the tab ?

  • @shipbassguy Check out this transcription. It matches the one found in the Charlie Parker Omnibook. It's an image - remove the spaces: htt p:// ww w. mindformusic. co m/public/image/donnalee1.bmp

  • you sound forced. try to relax a bit more, your time is all over the place, and not in a good way. otherwise nicely done :)

  • Wow this is the first actual video that in fact someone is playing as it was meant by Jaco, straight. Now but a fat back beat under it ;) Just like Jaco's walking bass with Weather Reports Night Passage and you will make me very happy.
