All the pictures and videos here are when this horse was 30-35. No younger!!!

Kama is THAT horse. The One. Kama is the horse that has ruined me for life. I love him more than anything. He is 35 this year and still going strong aside from a bit of arthritis in his front end. He was treated for, and recovered from anaplasmosis and lyme two years ago. Who says old horses have to be skinny and weak? He eats around 15 lbs of hay stretcher and fatty grain each day, but he's on the plump side and still looks great. We were winning timed gymkhana events (and not against little 4-h girls on ponies either) when he was 30 and 31, when he showed no signs of slowing down. I dont ride him anymore, his arthritis has been worse since the lyme. I'd hate to have him go down under me, even though he looks like he wouldn't mind a few laps around the pasture. Kama is an example of a GREAT elderly grade horse. I wouldnt be surprised if he lives to 40 and beyond, since he is in better shape than some horses in their late teens. I'd give ANYTHING for a kama baby, but his only son was put to sleep, and now he is a gelding.

  • Thursday, March 5, 2009. Kama either fell, or was chased through a barn door during the night, trapped under timbers and hinges, cast himself against the barn. We cleared away the broken door and tried to help him up, but couldn't get up, even with the help of all the neighbors and the fire department.

  • He was chilled to the bone, and I'm sure his arthritis hurt. The pasture was an ice sheet. 8 hours later, some saintly neighbors brought their circa 1950 backhoe over, and we were able to hoist him up on his feet again! Its gotten warmer, and Kama has been lying in the sun, rolling, and getting up and walking away all on his own. A VERY close call...hopefully the old man won't scare us again for a while...

  • Way to keep that boy happy and sound and to give him a forever home for the rest of his life! Let this be a lesson to all of those out there who think that old horses are always thin, or that because they can't be ridden then they need to go to auction. He looks wonderful, and I don't think he's fugly at all! Great job!

  • aw thanks :)

I don't think he's fugly either! But standardbreds often are. If they're perfectly sound I dont really care if they're ugly, but I think Kama is beautiful :)

  • So beautiful, he is in amazing shape! At my stables, there is a horse who is 27- although we feel bad for taking lessons on him. The owners tried to take him out of lessons and he immediately started getting very sick, he loves the attention he gets from the kids and even adults, he his very much loved :)

  • I think he is beautiful too! and for him to be the age he is, you've done a great job taking care of him! Our appaloosa who is 27 1/2 has arthritis in his hips, but since i put him on MSM his hips aren't bothering him as much. He runs like he did when he was young..it's amazing stuff

I see your post was 2 years ago, how is Kama now a days?

  • Very Beautiful :D

  • So beautiful!!

  • aww its so sweet that you take care of him even in his old age..i hav a 35 yr old retired polo pony who is still going strong as well--he walks trots canters gallops and even bucks when hes hyper..he has arthritis and i worry about him a lot, but he seems to be fine when i ride him..he taught me everything and i love him so much

  • @daintyhyena Standardbreds are not known for their beauty but overall I would say that when you get a beautful standarbred, they are perhaps the most beautiful horse in the world. To watch a horse trot at 33 mile per hour is a fabulous thing to see. The best lookinghorse I ever saw was a standardbred. Times have changed and they are not jugheads anymore. By the way, this is the best video about a horse on all of you tube -- the poster should be a movie director -- this is very well done.

  • This is what i want my boy (who's not even 2 yet!) to look like when he's 30! you've done an amazing job looking after your boy!

  • Thats amazing <3 .....My friends horse was a morgan and she lived almost untill her 40th birthday..She went peacefully :)

  • Awww, he's awesome...I have a 14 year old standardbred/quarterhorse mare, her name is Windy...Love her to bits, shes super fast and doesn't get tired easy ^__^

    Hope Karma is good!

  • He is absolutly gorgeous!... How long have you had him? one thing I've heard to be very good for arthritis is to put vinegar in their food.
