Hearkening back to the early days of the Internet...when most people got online through a text based terminal on a campus shell account or dialed in with a 300 baud modem...
Gopher is the protocol that always has missed a chance for revival. For instance, when mobile phones were in their infancy, a smart news organization could have implemented it for quick news for people . Because of the speed it would have worked well around 1999. But nope. Again today, it could have been a rival for RSS feeds and even an alternative source. But nope. There seems little chance that Gopher could be revived wide-spread, but at least it is there and Google doesn't own it - yet.
And Gopher can host HTML files (but you have to use a hierarchical home-page for multiple HTML home pages) which can have rich media. It can also host video and audio (and PNG images), for download or playing by the user (might be running Firefox with the Overbite sidecar)
