The Idea of North perform a John William's melody using dialogue from Star Wars Episode 4 at the Australian Institute of Music.

The Idea of North defy categorisation. As a quartet of musicians, their voices are their instruments: soprano, alto, tenor and bass, with a bit of vocal percussion thrown in. Their sound and style is distinct, yet they cross many musical genres: jazz, pop, folk, gospel, even comedy.

Their arrangements are extraordinary. They take songs you know and songs you don't and create songs you'll love. But it's not just about the music.

Their live performances are dynamic and engaging. They have an ability to connect with their audience through not only their passion for music, but also their relaxed presentation and their endearing sense of humour. After just one performance, you walk away feeling like you've known them for years.

What started out as four students from the Canberra School of Music at the Australian National University kicking around as friends, resulted as a group that has won international recognition and taken home awards such as the USA's 'Harmony Sweepstakes' and Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (USA) for Best Jazz Album & Best Jazz Song, top 10 albums on the Australian jazz and iTunes charts, as well as mesmerised fans across Australia and the globe.

The Idea of North are not only defying musical categorisation, but they're defying the odds of just how far a jazz-based vocal-instrumented musical-entertainment group from Australia can go.

The Australian Institute of Music leads by reputation with its diverse tertiary education for the music, audio, entertainment management and performing arts industry available anywhere in Australia. With a selection of degree, diploma and post-graduate studies to choose from, students gain maximum course flexibility, professional guidance and industry relevance, for a fully accredited 'hands on' tertiary qualification.

Integration is the name of the game at AIM with six music departments on offer. Students focus on one major area of study but can integrate across other areas of study through a wide range of elective choices. AIM departments include; contemporary performance, music theatre, classical performance, composition and music production, audio technology and entertainment management, taught by some of the finest industry practitioners available in Australia.

So whilst a student may for example take audio as their major study, they can also choose to take units from any one of the other five major areas. In this way, students build a portfolio of music, audio, entertainment & business skills to create diverse career opportunities.

From AIM's annual showcase where students have the opportunity to perform on stage with full production to a full house, comes smaller creative projects where the journey of writing, producing and recording a song in the studio can be documented on video and placed on the web through AIMtv, as part of the AIM learning and artist development experience.

At the completion of two years of intensive study at AIM, students graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree majoring in one of six areas or a Bachelor of Entertainment Management. Equipped with state of the art Q Recording Studios, 300-seat concert hall, 60-seat intimate performance space, fully equipped Apple Mac labs, performing arts library and over 800 students, the Australian Institute of Music offers the complete educational experience.

[Close Encounters of the Droid Kind]
You must use the Force
You must use the Force
(repeat ad nauseam)
You must use the Force

[Raiders of the Lost Wookiee]
Time ago, far, far away
Long time ago, far, far away
Kiss a Wookiee, kick a droid!
Fly the Falcon through an asteroid!
Till the princess is annoyed!
This is spaceships,
It's monsters,
It's Star Wars,
We love it!
Come and help me,
Obi-Wan
X-wing fighter
And a blaster gun!
Dance with Ewoks,
Oh, what fun!
This is spaceships,
It's monsters,
It's Star Wars,
We love it!

  • Actually, some of the words just describe scenes or events, and it's from all three movies of the original trilogy (A New Hope, The Empire Stirkes Back & Return of the Jedi).

Still a nice version of the song, though - I especially like "Leia" recording her message ...

  • EEEEEEEP *dies of amazing-ness* WOW.
