The reason they couldn't use Jim Belushi (who initially got famous in the short-lived 1979 CBS TV series "Working Stiffs"), is because he was still under contract to Disney at the time this film was made.

How come everybody is hating on Goodman? Sure this wasn't his best performance, but he does have a good voice, and is a real good actor.

Love the song, love the Blues Brothers, don't love John Goodman's involvement. And if I was casting the sequel I'd have used used Jim to replace John (either him or possibly John Popper).
Goodman sounds drunk here.
