well, with reliable Ballistic Rescue Parachutes widely available, I suppose someone will soon fly in one of these things.
Engine failure would be quite severe without a chute as from the looks it, of the glide ratio is about 1/1.

It looks like the main wing is aft of the center of gravity yet the craft has a steep takeoff ascent. In a stall condition, I am guessing that the tail would stall first, and being tail dominate, the craft might rotate around its main wing. Is that why all the mass if forward, to counteract the nose up torque of the rotating wing? - Keep up the great work.

When running, more air drag provides more ram-air and make the fan collect, compress and exhaust more amount of air.
This fan configuration also provides more efficient and quieter run. Because there is no Tip drags and centrifugal conic shaped flow distraction. (Ahh. much smaller ram-air surface than running classic axial fans of course)

This machine is not designed to "glide". So her payload capacity and purpose prevents her to glide. (I don't know any "RC glider" that can carry 2kgs of haul and 4kgs of battery )
So this device must be engined all the way, because -as you described- air drag applied to "cross flow fan wings" is much more than a standard aerofoil because of the radius. But this can be considered only when engines are down.

How does this thing glide when you turn off the motor? It looks like one huge airbrake, and I bet it would fall to the ground like a brick.
