i'm guess that's just his sound, if you listen to his other videos he sounds the same. he could also be using the Bb side of the horn, which does offer a much rounder, smoother tone in jazz.

He is spot on with his intonation and attacks. Clearly has mastery of the horn. I agree the tone is different than a typical horn though. Actually sounds like he is cup muted or partially stopped, but perhaps it's the setting that is causing it.

Excellent improvisation and overall phrasing treatment of this jazz classic. Tasteful!
My only minor quibble is the poor recording quality of the horn, which sounds muffled and somewhat distorted in the outdoor setting. The mic seems a little "hot".
Excellent group performance.
