I think the idea is that it is the strength of the emotions and memories that Sarah awakes in Chuck are so deeply rooted in his psyche that they provide a sort of structure around which his whole consciousness is built - Sarah effectively clings on to Chuck's whole self ; his love for her is inseperable from the rest of himself, and the link between them is so deep that it defies any seperation, and thus defies destruction - but maybe I'm just too much of a shipper.
