According to a Totonaca myth, Los Voladores, or the Flying Men, saved their village from a drought by appeasing the gods. They found a perfect tree, tall and straight, blessed it and carried it home with the utmost care and respect. After digging a hole and standing it upright, the men were ready for the ceremony. The men dressed themselves as birds, secured themselves to the tree with vines wrapped around their wrists, and made a plea to the gods through their flight.

Today, men re-enact this event, mostly as entertainment for tourists. Instead of a tree, they climb to the top of a tall pole, wind ropes around the pole, and leap into the air, descending slowly to the sounds of a drum and flute played on the ground.
