"Go outside," he said, giving me the biggest taste of hope there is. I always imagined him coming home from New York, and telling me to go to my door--that way, when I stepped outside, he'd be there. But this night wasn't like I imagined it. When I went outside, he wasn't standing there. His eyes weren't looking into mine, and his smile wasn't shining at me. There was just a dark, empty street, and I stood there, dumbfounded, on my front porch.

"Yeah?" I tried my best to hide the disappointment I felt. I couldn't help but feel a little bitter toward him for getting my hopes up.

"Now look up at the sky," he told me, and I wanted to know what the fuck he was doing to me.

But I looked up at the sky and found a gorgeous, sparkling sky. It almost took my breath away, but the sky wasn't what I wanted. It was HIM that I wanted, not a bunch of stars. They couldn't hug me. They couldn't hold me and tell me they couldn't wait until they'd see me again. They couldn't smile and make my knees weak. They just weren't him.

"Aren't the stars beautiful?" he asked, his voice low. I heard a few cars going by in the background, probably below the balcony of his New York apartment.

I nodded and but remembered he wasn't with me, so I had to verbally tell him. "Yeah, they are."

He stayed quite for a moment. "Now make a wish," he said, "on the biggest star you can find."

"Are you looking at the same one?" I asked, my voice a tiny whisper. "You know, the biggest star?"

"Yeah," he told me, and I could finally hear a smile in his voice. "Do you have your wish?"

I made a little noise in my throat so I wouldn't actually have to speak--I didn't think I was capable of speaking, anyway.

He waited a few seconds before telling me to make my wish. The phone went silent for a minute before he asked if I was done.

"Mhm," I said, "yeah."

"Chrissy?"

"Yes?"

"I love you."

My fingers wrapped around the railing involuntarily as my mouth fell and I tried making the perfect reply come through my lips, but it wasn't working. My voice was lost and I hoped to fucking God I found it soon, because this boy needed to know that I loved him more than he knew.

"Anthony," I murmured, "I, you know, I love you, too."

He chuckled. "And I miss you, Chrissy. I'll be home soon."

I nodded, and I guess he knew because he continued, "Before then, though, just know that I love you, and no distance could ever change that. You hear me? Nothing."

Still nodding, I tried my best to hide the tears that were now pouring down my cheeks and dripping profusely from my chin. "I love you, Anthony. Really. And I know, I know. I just can't wait for you to come home."

"My love's like a star, yeah
You can't always see me
But you know that I'm always there
When you see one shining
Take it as mine and remember I'm always near
If you see a comet, baby, I'm on it
Making my way back home
Just follow the glow, yeah
It won't be long just know that you're not alone."
