  • He tore apart his country, he severed alliances at the drop of a hat, he abandoned, mistreated and murdered his wives and his advisers and he drove his own daughter, Mary, half mad due to his bitterness, hatred and neglect. If there is a hell, I hope he's burning down there!

  • Am I the only one who notices a difference he announces his two daughters? He says mary but it sounded as if he announced elisabeth with more reverence

  • Clever words from Anne. At least, Henry knew that Anne would not make him a scene about the legitimacy of his kids.

  • @xxdressagedivaxx Yes! that is so true. He also did not like Anne because he wanted to choose his own bride. Cromwell did talk him into this but he constantly wanted to "pursue" someone. Anne got off easy. Outlived all the other queens, was present for Mary's coronation and got Hever Castle. She also kept good relationships with Edward, Elizabeth and Mary.

  • Apparently it wasn't just that Anne was not good-looking enough for Henry but apparently she was too curvaceous. A slim, shapeless woman back them resembled purity and meant they were a virgin. If you had curves, you would seem to be sexually active. He wanted Audrey Hepburn but he got Marilyn Monroe.

  • lol, Cromwell and his clapping :P

  • By the he married Anne of Cleves he was an obese old man, suffering from the effects of venereal disease. That this series chose to ignore history is too bad.

  • @Chrisiant I don't mean to demean Henry. He was very well educated and spoke several languages. But it has been pretty well established that More wrote the "Defence" and Cornysh wrote the songs.

I did not know this. My information is almost twenty years old. I'm delighted to learn something new, thank you. Even if it does sadly remove some of the remaining shine from Henry's reputation.

  • @Chrisiant Not sure where you got your information. "Greensleeves" is a traditional ballad. Even those songs attributed to him "Helas, my love," for example may have also been ghostwritten by William Cornysh.

  • @fgonzalez43 Which? "In Defense of the Faith"? Perhaps. I can see that. However, that still leaves "Greensleeves" which he wrote for Katherine of Aragon. From what I have read recently he truly loved Katherine when he was younger. If she'd been able to give him the son he so desperately wanted I think he'd have been quite content to stay with her. The Tudors were a very *new* ruling family dynastically speaking. There were still quite a few Plantagenets still living.

  • @Leo13218 Actually, contemporary reports of AoC describe her as slender, blonde, and quite pretty. It's likely that the Holbein portrait was fairly accurate. A court portraitist who was *too* flattering would not have kept his job for long--he was paid to paint a likeness after all. It's likely that AoC became "the King's sister" because in the volatile political atmosphere of the day, it was no longer a good idea for Henry to make an alliance with Cleves.
