The most costly attack of US Airforce in WWII.

Although we considered the americans from the very beginning of their history our friends, we had to fight against them in WWII (jun1941-aug1944 - german alliance) when they wanted to bomb our rafineries.

Of the 177 bombers (B 24 Liberator) that took part in the mission 54 were lost, a further 53 planes were heavily damaged.
The aircraft took off individually between 10:30 and 11:00 pm on June 11th, arriving over the target at dawn the following day. Ten bombers hit the Astra refinery at Ploesti, one B-24 attacked the port area of Constanta, the remaining two B-24s struck unidentified targets. Three ended up interned in Turkey, the rest manage to reach friendly bases in Iraq. Damage turned out to be minimal but the mission was considered a success.
Because of the bravery of the Romanian Airforce., no air attack was made for 1 year. IAR-80 was the main romanian fighter aircraft that distroyed two thirds of B24.

All the POW s were exceptionally treated and in aug 44 they returned home.
Right now we are the closest friend of the USA in EU. Our army is fighting shoulder to shoulder with US Army in Afghanistan and Iraq.

@aditzaditzaditza americanii au bombardat atunci din greseala inchisoarea orasului unde erau inchise mai multe femei peste 100 din ele murind in urma exploziei unei bombe .printre ele se afla si fata unui bogatas din sud care si-a trimis propria fata la inchisoare pentru a o pedepsi pentru o singura zi. fata asta era prietena realizatorului de televiziune i.grigorescu. este aceasi persoana ?

@janesionut Sorry, Im unfamiliar with the geography of Ploesti so most of what you said i dont understand. I've been there only a few times to visit my extended family as a kid. The way my grandfather used to tell the story of the air raid sounded so surreal. But its so cool to actually see what he was talking about. I find this coincidence fascinating. Anyways, glad you have shared your story with mine. And I also find pride in being connected to this historical event!
