http://gregvan.com/framing/shear_panel_nailing.htm Recently someone contacted me with a problem they had with their building inspector. The building inspector turned the framing inspection down on a room addition that they were building, because they nailed all of the shear panel 2 inches on center. This weekends a 2 x 4 and often splits it, creating problems with the strength of the wall. I'm here to tell you that over nailing shear panel framing can create structural problems for your home and building inspections. These are the problems at home builders face daily and inexperienced home builders will obviously face more of them, until they have learned the tricks of the trade. If you're planning on framing the room addition or even a new house, you should watch some more of our great videos on home construction and building framing. Greg has been involved in home framing for more than 30 years.
With wood framing yes. You CAN over nail a connection and make it LESS structurally sound. I've been framing/working in construction for 20+ years. When you put too many connectors in ANY joint you compromise its' integrity. Wood is a fibrous material. Nuff said.

i was recently given a red tag on my project because the shear wall panels were not staggered. do the pannels have to be staggered on a shear wall 9' w x16' in hight?

@chaton602 You would need to ask that question to your structrual engineer, but in most cases the answer is yes.
