i have always wondered why in the mid

90s hopkins was supposed to fight calzaghe but as soon as it got to the point of signing contracts hopkins started to demand more money or pull out ?

@lastruebeliever Actually glad you replied, I rewatched the Reid fight and Calzaghe may had edged that to be honest, the Hopkins one well I can't agree with you there. He does have power, Eubanks was nearing the end but has a great chin himself. Calzaghe has power, but he proved against Jones/Hopkins that hes not as great as the 46-0 record would suggest. His fight with Manfredo was disappointing, no power. Who do u have for Hopkins Dawson? Agree Tito over Oscar, did u have Vasilirov over Toney?

@lastruebeliever Have you actually watched Calzaghe's fight with Hopkins? Or his fight with Reid? He lost both, Calzaghe is a pillow-fisted mauler with no power, nobody who knows boxing would attempt to imitate him because his defense is shit - he gets hit so much, can't shoulder roll and keeps his left hand far too low. He shouldn't and never will be a hall of famer with that record, despite being "undefeated" he's lost two fights. Best attribute is his chin and stamina. And im British btw

In regard to Jones & Hopkins, Calzaghe reported a pretty laughable, "fear of flying" as one reason he wouldn't fight them. I remember thinking at the time how absurd that was, but it reached new levels of ridiculous when he went to the States to fight a well past-it Hopkins, & the corpse of Jones.

@pearcemark2.... the only reason there is still controversy as you choose to call it is down to the fact certain people cant accept when a fighter is beat and as for Hopkins being remembered yes he will for having great heart being a menace in the ring but also for being a dirty fighter which is a shame because i do like Hopkins but that doesnt change the fact that when he feels a fight isnt going his way he will resort to low tactics in the ring.

@truecreation He was "beat" in the same way that Sven Ottke "beat" his opponents. On paper.

In reality, people know the truth. The fact that it's been over 3 years and there's still controversy about the fight shows it. When people look back on Hopkins' record 100 years from now to learn about the legendary champion, they'll see that all his losses were razor close fights against unbeaten opponents. And when they watch them, they'll be shocked to see that only the Roy fight was a real loss.

@truecreation the fight was contracted to happen in the usa, at the last min frank warren and calzaghe wanted it in wales/cardif...so hopkins wanted 50% of the gate as his last min contract change........warren said no.
