Kuala Lumpur, December 29 -- Dataran Merdeka was enthralled by the exciting beats of various groups from around the world. Themed 'Beat the World', the World Drums Festival 2007 was officially launched with a hit of an enormous 'beduk' by Minister of Tourism, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

He was accompanied by Deputy Director General of Tourism Ministry, Dato' Razali Mohd. Daud, Deputy Secretary General of Tourism Ministry, Datuk Abdul Ghaffar A. Thambi, and Director General of Kilatan Unggul Travel and Tours Sdn. Bhd., Ruzaini Abdul Razak.

Organised by Kilatan Unggul Travel and Tours Sdn. Bhd. this inaugural event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board and Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage.

The event assembled wide range of artists portraying traditional instruments from their homeland and contemporary drum music performance. Participating countries were Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Singapore, Venezuela and Malaysia.

"As poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said, 'Music is the universal language of mankind', the power of music is such that it is able to touch the lives of many, no matter what culture they are from", said Tengku Adnan in his speech.

A mixture of the old and young generation beat can be heard in the composition that was played by all the music enthusiasts. Malaysian team, Eco Drums Circle headed by Afiq Safwan Adly presented a one of a kind performance. Their musical instruments consist of kitchen utensils such as wok, pots, pans, glass bottles, pails, and another unique instrument made from coconut husk. The crowd went wild with the rocking and exciting beat from home team.

The festival kicked off early last week with pocket shows at Sungai Wang Plaza followed by Central Market and Berjaya Times Square.

World Drums Festival will be back for more next year in July with more teams participating and larger crowd to cheer.
