Senator McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate on the Republican ticket should concern any person who values inquiry based on the scientific method--one of the most powerful thinking tools humans have ever developed. When asked about her position on teaching creationism in public schools, Palin, referring to both creationism and the theory of evolution, stated, "Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information."

  • There is a difference between teaching a belief as fact and teaching that beliefs exist. The first is indoctrinating. The second is education. Go hike a mole hill!

  • So should we waste time in SCIENCE class teaching about the existence of all the kinds of stupid things humans currently believe in? A very short list: Sasquatch, UFOs, The World Is Flat, Astrology, Creationism, Spontaneous Combustion... That's not the kind of education I want. That's just a trivial pursuit that can be chased down with Google.

    Go hike Mt. Ararat!

  • I guess I just don't see why you would use this as a criterion to judge a VP candidate. For myself, I like to keep Washington as contained as possible in their 1-sq mile, and believe that communities are stronger the more they do for themselves. I don't believe in creationism, but i wouldn't erase it's story. What we call SCIENCE is mostly theories. Gravity is a theory. should we cease explaining to children why they don't fall up?

  • Her wanting to give creationism equal footing as evolution should immediately disqualify her for ANY gov position. It shows a willingness to totally disregard easily observable phenomenon, which so far, like in the case of evolution, has not been the LEAST BIT disproven. As a theory, it's only gotten stronger over time.

We need leaders who understand what science and logic are all about. I don't want someone who ignores the obvious because it doesn't fit her stone-age misunderstandings. Please.

  • I am sorry to have to tell you this, but your video is insulting to those with intelligence. You have failed to provide the following evidence:

    (1) SP would have Creationism taught in SCIENCE class.

    (2) SP would give it equal footing with evolution.

    (3) there is any constitutional reason why a VP would get to mandate such a decision in the first place.

Creationism is religion. evolution is science. the purpose of education is not to tech what to think. but rather, how to learn.

  • "I am sorry to have to tell you this, but your video is insulting to those with intelligence." Then no McCain Palin supporters have been insulted by this video. :)

Responses: 1) Where else? Woodshop? Unless you mean "teach about creationism". But you said "teach creationism." BTW, why teach about creationism (people's dumb ideas about the world) when there are so many other valuable things to teach about?

    2) Palin cannot give it equal footing. That happens on its own merits or lack thereof.

  • 3) Since when do the Republicans care about the Constitution? Are you familiar at all with the Patriot Act?

  • If we shouldn't be afraid of information and teach our kids about intelligent design in schools. Then I suggest we teach our kids how to have safe sex in schools. We should teach kids about abortion in schools. Maybe we should teach kids how to give a quality blow job. It's just information isn't it?

  • I flat out agree with you. What I was getting at is Sarah Palin says we should teach creationism and intelligent design in school because it is "we shouldn't be afraid of information." I do not think however, she would want schools to teach kids about sexual issues because "we shouldn't be afraid of information." What I am saying is I think Palin is a hypocrite. I have a 16 year old daughter and I picked her school because they would teach her about sexuality.

  • In large part so does religion as a whole... I think there are places for everything... Schools should teach facts and the common subject matter that we accept as part of a ciriculum...

Religion, being as subjective as it is, should be left to the families or to the clergymen of whatever house of worship you happen to be a part of... Either way this should not be funded by public money and not imposed, or for that matter taught to, kids in public schools...

  • On what grounds... Why should people of a different faith, or no religious affiliation at all, be subject to spending their money to teach their children something that has no merit (at least within the context of their own lives)...

There are plenty of religiously affiliated schools but to say that public financing should go to support any religious view or beleif is a direct contradiction to the separation of church and state and an example of tyranny of the majority...

  • No it sounds like this video is trying to warn people about the dangers of misinformation cloaked as legitmate fact...

If your argument is based in religion than it has no place in the public schools... If you want your child taught about religion in school you are more than welcome to send them to a private religously oriented school...

  • Sounds like this video is trying to promote atheism, in the guise of evolution, in the schools, as the "teach only this view", do what we say, "hi yo! HITLER!" SURVIVE THE FITTEST.

  • Ed4wb: "I am sorry to have to tell you this, but your video is insulting to those with intelligence." Then no McCain Palin supporters have been insulted by this video. :)

    ROFLMAO!!! I'd give that 2 thumbs-up (if I could)!!!!!

  • cool, I get you.

  • The one difference here: Creationism was taught in REAL SCHOOLS only a few years ago. The ancient Greeks taught this a thousand years ago or more. Some people BELIEVE in creationism, unlike theories by the ancient greeks. We can talk about the ancient greeks theories on life and poke fun at them; today, you might upset some retard who loves jesus.

  • I wish I could agree that the constitution will protect us from creationism. HOWEVER: 1) Intelligent design WAS TAUGHT AT SCHOOLS FOR A WHILE. 2) Our current president has no qualms with breaking the constitution, thus giving us problem #1. 3) What's stopping Palin from doing the same thing our current president has done? After all, during her governorship rape victims had to pay $1200 for their rape kits (most likely because they contained the day after pill). NO OTHER STATE HAS EVER DONE THIS.

  • I think we should teach sexual education in schools, as well as perhaps having a open-ended discussion about abortion.

Face it, no matter what the upbringing teenagers may have, some of them will have sex. I'd rather these kids have that sex safely, without the chance of contracting a potentially life-threatening STD or ending up unable to pursue higher education due to pregnancy (which will also mean a harder life for the kid).

WHY NOT TEACH THIS? I'd really love to hear one good reason.
