Late afternoon at the vegetable market in Aluthgama.
Every Monday the vegetable market in Aluthgama is open. Thousands of people passes through the market during the day. There are public toilets near the market but according to a salesman the standard is so poor that people prefer to use the river banks and shrubs instead. The organic waste, plastics, paper etc. discarded at the market is being dumped behind the market on the site being seen in the end of this sequence.
Update Feb. 2008:
The dumpsite is no longer used by the Local Authorities. Access to the site has been blocked by a bank of clay preventing vehicles from entering the site. Collected waste is brought to other sites - primarily the bigger dump site in Dharga Town further up river.
Update Sep. 2008:
According to local sources the the dump site is in use again.
Update Dec. 2008:
According to other local sources the dump site isn't used anymore.
Update Dec. 2010: Dump site is closed and is covered in vegetation.
Thanks for your question alfaganztha. 3 reasons for posting this on YouTube: 1) INSOUs website links to these sequences as YouTube is a convenient way of storing video while 2) offering the contents to the world without implying a request for returns, and 3) INSOU supports local stakeholders in the area attempting to help develop a better waste management system. These sequences may be food for thought and might bring helpful inputs from the YouTube community.
