  • Hi again Ralfy mate. Was wondering what your thoughts were on a "Douglas Laing Port Ellen 25 Year Old" I have opportunity to get my hands on this for a reasonable price and was thinking of keeping one as an investment...ofcourse there'll be one to have now as well.

Thanks for your great reviews and have a very merry Christmas & a blessed new year!

  • @pierreonutube

Laings PE's tend to be good, but Indi bottles are always a gamble if you can't get to try the stuff before purchasing. I think you may have to throw the dice on this one or check Whiskybase and Whiskyfun

  • i wonder how all these fragrances appear in the whsiky...do they put all these items in the distillation flask before starting to boil?

  • @icommand

No, the result-flavour complexity is due to long-term physical and chemical interaction of sugars, alcohol, oak wood e.t.c. where complex hydro-carbon molecules break down to make an amazing spectrum of smells and flavours.

    Wikipedia for more detail !

  • Hi ralfy, is this whisky very readily available given that it closed in 1983? Most bottles online are quite pricey, are we paying because of the rareness or for the quality?

  • @lacrymosa85

    ... rareness,

... the quality of PE varies, however due to aging and the price charged for older cask-maturation bottlings, ... many PE's seem all right.

It's just got that iconic charisma.

  • More occasional Port Ellen or Brora :)

  • @llCpa

Laing's are an Independant Bottler who bottle other Companies Whisky. The Port Ellen is a 'collectable' decent Islay Malt which is no longer being produced. It is a different but same sourced single malt as I am reviewing here.

  • Have you tried port Ellen 30 yo? I like your reviews, making me want to taste whisky ;)

  • @aphasia2 ... it's a bit woody ! but generally fine, but not as good as the 21yo.
