Today's extreme hike is a difficult section of the Shining Rock Wilderness, starting at Camp Daniel Boone, down the Little East Fork Trail to Shining Rock, up the Art Loeb through the Narrows to Deep Gap, and continuing on back to Camp Daniel Boone. Today's 5hr 20min hike is usually a 3 day hike (throwing in Cold Mtn) for me and my sons. But not for the Time Pressured Extreme Day Hiker! Supplies carried: day pack, 1.25 Liters water, lunch, gorp, camera, dog treats, hat, knife, dog bowl, towel, map and compass (just in case)... By J Horwitz

  • @er1330 more dogs on hikes rainbowpediatricsDOTnet/shiningrock/ and rainbowpediatricsDOTnet/shiningrock07/ (this group has stella being carried like a lamb)

  • @er1330 also, i take cheese with me and dog treats (T-bones, other meat-like snacks) to try and make her eat. dogs dont seem to like to eat when they are on the move, and I give her water when I take water unless we are hiking along a stream. btw my dogs always "claim" the air mattress in the tent...

  • @er1330 Thank you for your comment. When Stella first hiked, (< 1 year old) she gave out before the end of the day and would instantly nap when we stopped moving and we ended up carrying her like a lamb over our shoulders... otherwise she has always kept up. I dont know the answer to your question but wouldnt want to push him too hard or risk having a dehydrated, seizing dog in the middle of nowhere. I guess if you are prepared to carry him if/when he gets tired maybe try the overnight

  • I have a shorty jack russell and want to take him on longer hikes. He is 3 years old, but he seems to get over heated easily - he isn't overweight or anything -- do you think he just needs more conditioning? I would like to take him on some extended backpacking trips but am not sure if he can keep up.
