Gameplay from Qogo (a Q*bert clone) playing on the Memotech MTX512. Retro Gaming.

This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability.
It's more a case of me speaking my thoughts while playing the games, many for the first time, and most for the first time in a very long time... so it's all a little spontaneous and random.
Predictably, as I never practice before recording, I usually play very badly.

Given that I am playing many of these games for the first time, and everything I say is completely off the cuff, you probably shouldn't take what I say overly seriously. The opinions that I express are my feelings at the time, but it's entirely possible that they would be different if I were to take the time to get to grips with the game.

However, given that these videos are intended to show that "first time experience", I believe they have some validity or merit.

  • The enemies are too fast compared to Q-Bert D:

  • @AfroedNinja Yeah, they are. That seems to be a common theme on MTX games.

  • I am horrible at qbert games, but this is the first time I understand how painful it is to watch someone bad at it, play. lol

The music is hilarious, I would play the game 5 times before never ever running it again lol. That's one less than if there was no music. I am very glad that C.Sawyer has moved to much better games since then.

Having said that, the animation is really good and the sound, for the limited it is, it is quite good.

Thanks for playing the game for us.

  • @Trusteft Oddly, back in the day, and with a lot of time to waste, I think I'd have played this quite a lot. My reactions aren't what they used to be though, so I don't think any amount of practice now would help me :)

  • I thought these MTX games looked (and sounded) an awful lot like SG-1000 games. Now I know why. I do have to say, though, that as good as this version of Q-bert looks, losing your place every time you lose a life would seriously tick me off.

  • @vincentx77 They're all pretty much based on Colecovision hardware, it seems :)

  • Fantastic to see this after 26-27 years. This was one of a number of games for the mtx 512 that I felt were better than those on the beeb. Think I got to a level 7 or 8 when you have to jump on the spaces twice each, you'd have two bouncy balls and a boomerang or two. Thanks for doing this (but feel free to practice for 5 mins first!) Cheers

  • This looks like a good game completely hosed by difficulty settings.

  • that yellow ball is pure evil lol

  • YouTube makes some really odd suggestion on this video!

  • Tell you what Steve, I have been impressed by all the game I have seen on this system so far.

  • The GAMEBOY version of this is amazing it even features Q*Bert's swearing sample, there was also a great Shareware version for the AMIGA called Q*Bic, they might have it as a .Lha on AMINET.

  • @DeviouslyDevious

    Yep. Both amazing games.

  • Christopher Sawyer? That wouldn't be the bloke who wrote Transport Tycoon and Rollercoaster Tycoon would it?

  • I think it's pronounced "throat wobbler mangrove".

  • oh, this takes me back a long time. Q-bert was indeed the game i played, but this looks so close to it. could it be done by the same developpers?

anyway, it's a fun game to play, but as far as i could remeber Q-bert, the enemies where much slower on that one. does this game have a dificulty setting where you could make them a bit slower?

anyway, thanks for sharing. have a nice day.

    kind regards, ronald.
