I could be wrong about this, and it's been decades since I saw that episode, but I'm nearly 95 percent sure she DID say "Negro" (not colored) in the pilot episode.

I loved Julia when I was 8-9 years old. I really like Julias sons little playmate Earl J Wagedorn.

I adore Diahann Carroll and I really liked the show "Julia." However, it was an anachronism by the time it aired during the cresting of the civil rights era. The criticism that Carroll and the show endured from some quarters of the black community had to be hurtful, but it was, unfortunately, out of sync with the era, as many sitcoms at that time were. Those were tumultuous times that gave birth to social changes the likes of which we had not seen before. "Julia" reflected none of that.

She probably got more criticism from black people than white people for playing a well educated middle class black nurse working with a white doctor. And the missing father figure was serving his country in Vietnam not out bedding other women.
This show was very nice. You catch more flies with honey rather than vinegar, so it was wise not to make it about angry blacks. That wouldn't have served the purpose of helping race relations.

"Julia" was even shown in Puerto Rico. Thank you Diahann. We love you here too.

Diahann Carroll was my first role model. I was very young when Julia aired. The character Julia was dignified, intelligent and educated. As an African-American female, Ms Carroll's gave me something to aspire to.
