Landsend Radio GLD in the 1960's

Landsend Radio GLD was the United Kingdom's coast radio station covering the all important southwestern approaches to the UK. The station took over from Marconi's original Lizard station, retaining it's callsign.

This video is amazing. My brother sent me this link a few months ago. Our dad, Bernard Kelly is in the opening scene smoking his pipe. He died 30 years ago, and it was incredible to hear him talk again after so long.

By the way, he was from Manchester, so this might explain some of the references about the accent.

A real J R Hartley moment.

Its nice to see who I was supposed to be talking to at GLD nearly 50 years on! After a long and fruitless search of BT archives it was a great surprise to see the end result of the filming for the first time.

I used to listen to all these stations from home in Central England many years ago as a short wave listener. Shame that technonogy has to move on, I spent many happy hours, especially on 2182 , I could here whole of the UK and it certainly became interesting when the WX became stormy.

@blunklaura i got interested in it, too. Landsend accent almost sounds like Irish or the eastcoast American, doesn't it?! it's totally different from the one spoken in the south east provinces of the isle.

I didn't know I could get Lands End Radio on You Tube!! I'm new to this!! I know all the guys on this video. I was OC there from 1957 to 1960. Hello to Frank Kelley, Lawrence Lawrie, Bill Moffat......and to many others who I hope are still with us. Very many happy memories. I'm now retired - of course - now living in Crosby overlooking the River Mersey. Still in contact with the sea, watching the ships come and go - what few ships remain! Ernie Jardine
