Cam chain tensioner is functioning fine; valve clearances are spot-on what they should be, plugs are new and not cross-threaded. Valve cover is on fine. There are 15 pins between the timing marks on the camshafts. The timing marks line up as they should. Ideas?

  • Correct number of pins between the exhaust and inlet cam, but the exhuast cam was one tooth out... They move more than I thought when you tighten the camshaft holders down :D

Corrected the timing and it's all hunky-dory. No metal or plastic in the oil and clearances are still good, so no harm done ;)

  • shims perhaps? are you lacking bottom end power?

  • No, the shims have just been done. The engine turns over by hand fine, and the cold clearances are absolutely bang-on what they should be. It also starts up and idles fine - it's just making a racket from the cam-chain tunnel.

  • I'am not that good in English but i'll give it a try..

I'ts yous Cam tensioner. Is stuckt. Put it out en clesn it. if it not works fit a new one.

    succes!

  • Thank you, although I am 100% sure it is not the CCT. I have already had that out and checked its operation - it is fine. I also have a spare CCT which I have tested, and the noise is the same. It's either the timing, or the cam-chain guide blade :) Once I get some garage time (end of November most likely), it will get looked at again :)

  • sounds like a diesel

  • That is because you need the part for the 98 bike not 99.

  • Hey, I just wanted to thank you for uploading this video and updating it with your solution. I had a similar noise and thought it was my CCT, stumbled across your video and saw how similar my engine noise was to yours. Sure enough it the timing was off a notch. Your upload saved me time and money, thanks a lot!

  • CAM CHAIN - SLACK AS NUNS CHUFF

  • So you got it sorted then. Good.

  • No it's not, sorry :) I had the right part. Have a look through some of the older comments and you'll see it's because the timing was one tooth out on the exhaust cam.

It was the earlier bikes that were recalled. Mine came fitted with the modded tensioner from the factory(shown by two pink dots painted on the tensioner body) as it is a '99 model.

  • I used to have the same bike model. These bikes had a factory recall for weak cam chain tensioners. These are replaced by the earlier 98 models tensioner and as good as gold.

  • Sounds like con rod big end bearing failure.

Definitely not cam chain or tensioner.
