Full Symphony - http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=3B1FEB74F427013E&playnext=1

The first movement of Charles-Marie Widor's Fifth Symphony for Organ in F Major. The organist is Olivier Latry, the titular organist (one of three) at Notre Dame de Paris.

Des Grande Orgue du Notre Dame de Paris, essentially built by Aristide Cavaille-Coll in 1867, currently has 110 stops, 153 ranks (an excellent stop-rank ratio) an electrified action with a 5-manual console, and approximately 7,900 pipes.

  • Cavaille-Coll?

  • @LucaDellOsta

Notre Dame de Paris, so yes and no. Heavily augmented Cavaille-Coll.

  • Very good recording of the Organ pre-1990 rebuild. Thanks for posting!

  • I know, I'm glad I found it. I heard a recording of the Bombardes earlier today, was very, very displeased...they sound like trombones. Bad Frenchmen! And they wondered why Latry started touring more...

  • Would be interesting if you can confirm the date of recording. The Organ was given a comprehensive clean I believe in 1986, even though they knew they would rebuild it from 1990. So if the recording is just after this it would explain the very good sound being produced on this recording. Thanks.

  • I'm having a bit of trouble tracking down the date of recording. The album was published in '97, but it's clearly recorded before that, because the Bombardes are very easily recognizable, and even going out of tune there is no possible way they could mutate into trombones. Judging by the quality of the audio equipment itself and that Latry became Titulair in 1985, I think we can put it sometime between 1985 and 1989.

  • Very talented composer and equally gifted performer! Despite the limited sound quality a pleasure to listen to.

  • Olivier Latry et ses chamades... il en profite!!

  • This is simply amazing!

  • If I were them I would remove every modification Cochereau made and let that be the end of it.

  • I agree, more power on the Chamades and Bombardes is the next stage for Notre-Dame, whoever restores it next.

  • One of his best performances..........

  • I love when he breaks off at 7:26. I've always loved this piece, but today a coworker pointed out the uniqueness of this passage and I can't stop listening to it. Just simply amazing.

  • I'd say that's right, certainly before the rebuild as I recognise the reeds - not likely to be 1989 though as it was already falling to bits then, so I'd go for 1986-88. Remarkable recording, I would like to get hold of a copy of this for the library! Thanks again for posting!
