Before the end of their stay at Passages, after they have come to understand the reasoning behind that statement, the same people invariably grasp the concept. They understand that if they are ever to be truly happy, they must put to rest that hurtful incident in their lives.
Often what causes you distress today is only the imagined events of the future. For you to feel distress, fear, or anxiety over a future event, you must use your mind to imagine a bad outcome. If you don't use your imagination, it's impossible to feel fear or stress. You should get a great deal of comfort from that information because your imagination is entirely under your control. You can just as easily imagine a good outcome. Here's an example so you can see what I mean.
