New Melbourne band The Kwela Swingsters play a 1950's classic Kwela tune by Strike Vilikazi. Meadowland is an ironic song extolling the virtues of a new township near Joburg. Vs 1 says 'The white folk are moving to Meadowlands' Vs 2 says 'The street boys are going there too . . . ' Township jive from South Africa with penny whistle as the lead instrument became popular as dance music in the '50s, using affordable instruments to imitate the American swing bands of the era.

  • l love it, it makes me proud as a South African.

  • @mngsbu002 There's another girl on YouTube who sings it worse than this girl. At least this band is jiving, as for the pronounciation....well...that's another matter. I also agree that we don't need to be flattered,,,WHY??? Our music is superb and people know it hence they copy it. Ktastsi, what's wrong with you?!

  • Nice! but also listen to "The Meteors with Archie Coker Meadowlands 1962" Carl Enslin.

  • GRRREEATT !

  • Hey people, at least they are keeping this song alive. I dont see may other options on youtube, hey? SO whatever with yoru big old chip on your big old shoulder. AMANDLAAAAAAAAAAAA! A WETHU. IT IS OURS.

  • For 70 years, European jazz musicians have been playing music which largely originated with Afro-Americans. In the sixties, white British rock groups like the Rolling Stones popularised black rhythm & blues.

South Africans should be proud of their musical roots and whilst it does seem strange that white Australians should be singing about the force removals of the Apatheid era, it is no stranger than the late George Melly singing the songs of Bessie Smith.....

  • why can't meadowlands be found on youtube with miriam makeba singing it? or at least a good real south african group? lol

  • What a joke...a SAFA in Aus saying this...with my Sotho bra on this...joke...typical aussie liberals trying to "associate"...only bloody Melbourne.

  • LOL... You guys had fun with the song. And that's whats important... Made me smile. NICE

  • Tooo serious man... why boots the sink in? This is just the goood dancing music and I like itttt...
