They were never metal. They were metal core way way back before they were famous (sounding the seventh album). They have never claimed to be metal since. Waking the fallen was more of a melodic metal album, and it did have its metal influences.

Avenged is their own genre really. The bring in a lot of everything from metal riffs to classical guitar... country... hip hop.

Don't get all hurt because you dislike a band, particularly when the band says themselves thy are not a metal band.
