Jones' name is synonymous with the Hammond B3 organ. At 17, he recorded the instrument's anthem, "Green Onions," with his band Booker T and The MG's. Watch him play the song all alone in the NPR Music offices -- and with such joy, you'd swear he just discovered it.

I learned a lot of Booker's song. Back n the day I'd buy his records, take them home & learn them all. I play by ear & I have a pretty good ear but even though some of his songs R relatively "easy" it still took me a while to get 'em down perfect. Note by note I learned a lot of his music. I can read & write cord charts but that's about it. I spent many many hrs. Sitting in front of my B3. Booker T. & Jimmy Smith are my favorites. Mr. Jones actually got a paper route to be able to pay for lessons on the Hammond? Now that itself is a lesson to today's youngsters.
