Pt. 2 of 2
An in-depth description and visual presentation of what it is like for one person who is severely affected by hyperacusis, which is collapsed tolerance to loud noises. It is physical damage to the inner ear. People with hyperacusis often test normal on standard hearing tests. They have a collapsed tolerance to certain sounds/frequencies. A special test is needed to determine the range of Loudness Discomfort Level (LDL). Normal is in the 90 range. Some with hyperacusis fall in the 50-60 range. Living isolated and on disability is common. Treatment is very expensive and insurance isn't accepted at the few centers that have specially trained audiologists to treat hyperacusis and tinnitus. The sound of a baby crying can be auditory hell for the hyperacusis sufferer. Hyperacusis can accompany brain injury, exposure to loud noise or accompany autism. For more info, please visit:
