I took this video about two months ago, and now the symptoms are back (though no eye or nose discharge). She snuffles, sneezes and breathes laboriously with no provokation. A little bit like hyperventilating, only she'll still eat, drink, and play, and it only lasts a few seconds here and there over about an hour. Can't figure out the trigger. She secretly eats everything she finds on the ground and likes to dig in the dirt.

Needless to say, it's REALLY troubling.

Any guesses what this may be? (And don't worry, I have a vet appt scheduled soon, and will take her asap if anything at all changes e.g. if she gets lethargic, won't eat, etc.)

  • My dog just started making these noises like 5 mins ago and shes still doing it.

    Could you help?

what is it? did you ever find out? Its late and I cant get him to a vet

  • @aimexgoesxrawr: It's basically just a sign of overexcitement. In this case, she'd inhaled some dirt, but she'll do something similar when she gets really excited over something (a new toy, new people). It just takes a few minutes of 'quiet time,' a soothing voice and sometimes I'll massage her back/throat lightly. Good as new.

  • i have a dashound named oscar and he does this to but the thing he is doing is hyperventilating i dont know why he does it tho but i try to calm him down but it just doesn't work

  • @DaHolyGrenade It has actually gotten a lot better as she's aged. Sometimes it's because she's inhaled dirt from digging in the garden and sometimes it's excitement. Just calming her down and rubbing her chest a little usually helps. I have also and I can't believe I'm admitting it given her doggie mouth-to-mouth (mouth over her mouth and nose, exhale once and stop, and it will make a little sound and clear her passageway). Seems pretty harmless overall. Thankfu for all the comments here, too!

  • I think we solved the mystery-- she's been sniffing dirt! She usually calms down after a few minutes. Time to hide the potted plants...

  • it's called a reverse sneeze. Lots of small breed dogs do this. it's nothing to worry about.

  • Reverse sneezing!! It sounds horrible and scares the owners but it happens with small breeds its when the try to breath through their mouths and noses at the same time and often happens when they are excited. You will notice it tends to lessen when the dog calms down a bit.

  • It sounds like a reverse sneeze. This is the second dachshund we have had that sies this and because they have bad allergies they do this. Look up videos on reverse sneezing.

  • My Dachshund would do this at time all I had to do was softly massage the front of his neck.

  • conjestive heart faliure my dog died to day she make the same noise

  • @Teknakill Thanks for a lead in my search for a working (humane!) treatment for "Hardly's" laryngeal collapse.

    Sadly it does not apply to my Chihuahua,but here is a (simplifies) definition;

    Anthracosis [an′thrəkō′sis/]

"..chronic lung disease characterized by a deposit of coal dust in the lungs & the formation of black nodules on the bronchioles resulting in focal emphysema.

(Kinda' make one wonder how many smaller dogs live their lives in the house of - or on the lap of - a smoker...)

    Tnx2

  • Laryngeal Collapse was the sad diagnosis of my 8yo Chihuahua w/ same symptoms.

She had "reverse sneezing" for a while,in particular when excited, but when she began to have periods (10sec - 1-2min) of very labored breathing at night I had an endoscopy performed. Before the endoscopy, the vet suspected elongated palette; common among small breeds (especially if NOT from a responsible breeder but bought at a store = from puppy-mills who breed w/o recommended tests)

Get a proper diagnosis. Good Luck

  • Hi Catfightproductions, if you feel that sniffing dirt is the issue, I know that some plants are poisonous to dogs, but I believe they need to eat them, not sure if sniffing is a problem. You would need to get a list from the Internet as the plants affecting dogs seem harmless to us.

Also try holding her nose shut gently with the palm of your hand, the dog should have no discomfort (don't do it too hard) and start breathing normally through the mouth. If that is the case, then she is excited.

  • @sk8tergal513

She needs to change her career. She should try to be an english teacher. It may help you.
