What about the fact that the media is controlled by the wealthy elite and the state and used as a tool to propagate their ideas and, most importantly, make people docile and controllable. I recommend you to watch the documentary series "The century of the self" by Adam Curtis on Google videos for a more in depth explanation about how this came about and how it is being used. Commercialization, consumerism, advertizing and TV are the new "opiums of the people".
